A Time to be Born:

In the year of 1930, the 28th day of June, in Okeechobee, Florida our Lord created a masterpiece given unto Sylvester Humphrey Sr. and Elnora McCray Humphrey nameth Sylvester Humphrey Jr.

A Time to Learn:

Sylvester attended Douglas-Brown High School in Okeechobee, Florida where he graduated in 1948. He then enrolled at Tuskeegee Institute for 1 year until he was drafted into the United Stated Army; where he served five years. After being honorably discharged from the service, Sylvester  eagerly enrolled at Bethune Cookman College where he received his Degree in Education. A man of pride and motivation he was; led him to further his education Florida Atlantic University, in Boca Raton, Florida,  where he earned his Specialist Degree in Guidance Counseling.

A Time To Unite:

Mr. Sylvester Humphrey Jr. heeded to the "Love Call" and was united in the Holy Estate of Matrimony to Ms. Isabelle Williams Rease, December 26, 1967, with whom he was united for 52 years, until the Lord called him home.

A Time To Teach:

Sylvester started his educational career in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He worked as Recreational Supervisor for 5 years. Sylvester then returned to Clewiston, Florida to share his vision, knowledge, and care to the students of Harlem Academy as a English and Social Studies Teacher. At that time Sylvester also taught the children of Harlem to swim at the Harlem Pool Facilities. After receiving his higher educational degrees, Sylvester served as the first african american teacher in Hendry County intergrated schools. He was also employed as a teacher and principal for the Seminole Indian Reservation Schools, he administered GED testing to inmates at the local prison and later a guidance counselor at Clewiston Elementary School for 15 years. He also taught English and the GED courses at the Clewiston Senior High School Adult Education program, where Sylvester assisted numerous young adults accomplish their GED. Soon after, he was appointed to the position of Director of Transportation for Hendry County Schools until he retired after 46 years of service. His  efforts in building up his community was a continuous journey.  Sylvester  received numerous awards from the State of  Florida, the city of Clewiston, Florida other surrounding cities, and the Harlem community. He served on numerous projects in the best interest of Harlem, as he put forth maximum efforts to create a better community. For him, Harlem was a priority and he continued these efforts until his demise.

A Time To worship:

Mr. Humphrey accepted Jesus Christ as his savior at a young age as he grew up in the Baptist Church. However, he joined the New Bethel A.M.E. church in Harlem as an Adult and was an active member until sickness prevented him from attending.

A Time To Mourn:

Sylvester is survived by his loving wife Isabelle Humphrey; 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great great-grandchildren. Siblings, his brothers: Marion Humphrey (Vera), Lawrence Humphrey, (Deceased) (Mary) Georgetown, SC; sisters: Ina Pearl Latimer (Harold- Deceased) Port Ritchey, FL and Bernice Thompson (Deceased) (Robert- Deceased) Ft. Lauderdale, FL and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, his devoted friend, Eddie Redd Sr. and sorrowing friends who shared a part of his life.
