Obituary

Henry Lee Miller was born on May 17, 1941 to the late Elizabeth and Leroy Miller in Belle Glade, Florida and departed on January 13, 2020. There were 6 siblings, 5 of whom preceded him in death; Leola Miller Holland (Venton) Myrtle Miller Harper (William)Johnnie Rutledge, Joseph Rutledge, Bertha Rutledge Davis (Ollice). "Hen" as he was affectionately called by those who knew him well; attended the Loading Ramp School until 6th grade. He then attended Lake Shore Elementary and Lake Shore High School graduating in the Class of 1960. Hen was an accomplished trumpet player and enjoyed his time in the band. After graduation he attended Palm Beach Junior College in West Palm Beach.
In 1971 he was accepted to John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tennessee; where he received his degree in Embalming and Funeral Directing. He interned at Taylor Funeral Home and was employed there for several years.
In September 1975, he and Harma opened Miller Mortuary on Avenue E in a vacant fast food restaurant building. In 1978 he designed and constructed a new mortuary on 3rd Street.
He enjoyed singing tenor and leading songs in the St. John First Baptist Church adult choir. He also served as deacon for over 40 years. His love for St. John was deeply rooted from his great grandfather, Will Smith who founded the church on his own property which was known as "The Yard".
He is survived by his childhood sweetheart, wife Harma Lee Mims Miller married in 1963, two children Harva (Houston), Health (Mirelle), two grandchildren Haylynn and Hayden Tate. One sister Ida Bell Miller Foster, four sister in law's Estelle Pyfrom (Willie), Sally Kearse Brown (Melvin), Florence Bell Jackson, Tequesta Cox (Jane), Luevonue Lincoln (Eugene) both deceased; Helen Rutledge (Johnny deceased), godchildren, Patricia Walker, Juanita Mottley, David Myers, Dr. Vincent June, Joe Jenkins, Tilda Jenkins, Danny Brown, Danneshia Brown, Briyanca Issacs, Rachad Hewitt, NeKeria Hewitt, Jenifer Coriolan, Warren Speaks (deceased)  and a host of devoted and loving nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.
His Legacy
•In his business he mentored many mortuary science interns
•Over the years he sponsored a community baseball team which he thoroughly    enjoyed in Belle Glade
•He sponsored the reading program at Lake Shore Middle School and was honored to have the reading room named in his honor. The Henry Lee Miller Reading Room
•He was responsible for the chartering of the Xi Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated and he also served as Chapter President
•He received the Belle Glade Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year Award for multiple years
•He performed marriage ceremonies to many couples in the Glades area
•His love for children was exemplified by the support that he has given to his 13 godchildren over the years
•He sponsored and paid the fees for many who were interested in becoming members Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated
•He contributed to all aspects of community service, community projects and other initiatives
•He loved to travel with his family and enjoyed time in the European countries of Greece, France, Portugal, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. He also traveled throughout the Caribbean Islands and South Africa
•He was a problem solver and an avid listener and rarely accepted no as an option to be defeated
•He was one of the kindest people you could ever meet. He never met a stranger. Hen was a jokester and loved to pull pranks on people. He was gracious and opened his home to many over the year's
•He made every effort to ease the impact of losing a loved one. Many times you could hear laughter from his office while families were making funeral arrangements
•He was jovial, and his laughter was contagious, genuine, and authentic which connected with everyone he encountered. Many people young and old have a Henry Miller memory or story that they reflect upon fondly
