Obituary

Gertrude Chalmers Lee was born March 5, 1931, the youngest of 15, in Louise, MS to
James Cleveland Chalmers and Elsie Coleman.
She attended school in Louise, MS. She accepted the Christian faith at an early age at Mt.
Zion Baptist Church and continued to serve the Lord throughout her lifetime. She was
married to J. W. Broomfield and to this union was born one daughter, Regina. A daddy's
girl, Gert and JW parted ways after a few years and she returned home to her dad to stay
until his demise in 1956. She later moved to Pahokee with her sister who told her about
the plentiful harvest and money to be made on the muck.
After moving to Pahokee she first joined the Beulah Baptist Church under the leadership
of Rev. Eulis Wright. She transferred her membership to Greater New Hope in 1964
under the leadership of Rev. W. M. Bouyer. There she served as an Usher and member of
the Senior Women's Missionary Society.
She was joined in holy matrimony to Mr. Sherman Lee in 1969. Together they were the
parents of 4; Regina, Lavon, Sherman Jr and Joann.
For many years she has been an active member of the City of Pahokee Wellness Program.
She enjoyed the get together with local senior, the fellowship and monthly trips taken to
the movies, Wal-Mart, Goodwill and the County and City Commission Meetings.
Ms. Gert will be dearly missed by her children, Regina Harper-White; Lavon J. Camel,
Sherman Lee Jr (Elaine) and Joann Lee Jackson; her 10 grands, Albert Harper, III
(Lawanda), Jeffrey Jackson (Charlene), Gerald Jackson, Vantavia Jackson, Reginald
Jackson, Michael Lee (Jeannette), Amber Lee, Mathis Jackson Jr, Jules Jackson and
Sonya Jackson; her phone partners, Mary Bryant, Gracie Orr, Freddie Mae Jackson, Betty
Blackman and Helen Maxey; the Pahokee Wellness Crew; a host of great grands, nieces,
nephews, church family and caretakers (you know who you are). She will be missed by
all who knew and loved her.
