Alice
Monroe
Sep 24, 1937 — May 30, 2019
Belle Glade
On Friday, September 24, 1937 an exceptional baby girl was born in Blakely, Georgia to
the late Minnie and John Hollman; they named their daughter Alice Mae. When Alice was a
young child, her father, John, died suddenly. Together he and his wife shared two other children:
John, Jr. and Louise. Her mother later remarried to George Clarke, Sr.
Her mother passed shortly after the birth of her last child, leaving Alice and her siblings
to be raised by her stepfather. After the death of her mother, Alice relocated to Panama City,
Florida to live with her aunt, Niomi, at the age of fourteen. She attended the public schools of
Bay County. At the age of Twenty-two, she moved to Belle Glade, Florida with her first two
children to be closer to her siblings and stepfather. It was there that she met her husband, David
Monroe, Jr; to that union she had four more children.
At an early age, Alice professed her faith in Jesus Christ and frequently visited local
churches. While raising her family, she also maintained a job in agriculture before transitioning
to a position of Nurse's Assistant at Glades General Hospital. She was later employed by the
Palm Beach County Health Department where she was promoted to the position of medical
technician. She held this position until her retirement.
Alice loved to entertain and to care for her family and friends, and as a result of her
pleasant personality and generous spirit, she was loved by many. Her life was as beautiful as the
flowers that she loved, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of those who knew her.
Alice, 81, quietly departed this life Thursday, May 30, 2019 at her home with family. She was
preceded in death by her stepfather, George Clarke; and brothers: John Hollman, Jr., George
Clark, Jr. and Ralph Clark.
Her beautiful life will be forever cherished by her children: Linda Hollman-Monroe,
Gregory (Shannon) Hollman-Monroe, Priscilla (Timothy) Monroe-Milton, David Monroe III,
Arthur Monroe, and Winford (Ouida/Deceased) Monroe; her ten grandchildren:
Edward Johnson, Jr., Lee Washington, Al'Licia Pittman, Dietrich Monroe, Gregory Monroe, Jr.,
LaSondra (James) Monroe-Howard, LaTura Campbell, Timothy Milton, Jr., Arthur Monroe, Jr.,
Arkevin Monroe, Javarris Monroe, Nina Monroe, Winford Monroe, Jr. (Deceased), Travis,
LaKesha, Joquetta, Roshandra, Amesha; a host of great-grandchildren; brother, William Clark;
sisters: Louise (Edgar/Deceased) Jones, Mordine (Rick/Deceased) Avery, Betty (Willie/
Deceased) McClendon, Jennie (Rayford/Deceased) Slaughter; and a host of devoted nieces,
nephews, cousins and family friends.
Alice will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
We love you, Ma.
